Review of Process and Calendaring Schedule
- Arrive 30 minutes early to talk about the process and review schedule.
- Walk into each classroom quietly.
- Reserve thoughts and observations for debrief time.
- Smile and show appreciation.
- Observe for five minutes before taking notes.
- Interact with students when appropriate. Ask questions such as, “What are you learning today? Why do you think it’s important?”
The Debrief
- The purpose is for personal reflection and must follow the STAR Process.
- We are not here for evaluation; evaluation takes multiple observations. We are visiting the classroom for personal reflection.
- It is OK if you don’t see all Indicators during the observation.
- During debrief, use “I” statements.
- “I saw/noticed (strategy) happening when teacher/.students…”
- “I did not see…”
- “I would like to have seen…”
- “I saw/noticed an opportunity to…”
Talk About Confidentiality

- Please don’t talk to each other during the observation.
- Please do not give any feedback on instruction, positive or negative.
- You can describe the process.
- Be appreciative, not complementary.
