Rules of Engagement

Review of Process and Calendaring Schedule

  • Arrive 30 minutes early to talk about the process and review schedule.
  • Walk into each classroom quietly.
  • Reserve thoughts and observations for debrief time.
  • Smile and show appreciation.
  • Observe for five minutes before taking notes.
  • Interact with students when appropriate. Ask questions such as, “What are you learning today? Why do you think it’s important?”

The Debrief

  • The purpose is for personal reflection and must follow the STAR Process.
  • We are not here for evaluation; evaluation takes multiple observations. We are visiting the classroom for personal reflection.
  • It is OK if you don’t see all Indicators during the observation.
  • During debrief, use “I” statements.
  • “I saw/noticed (strategy) happening when teacher/.students…”
  • “I did not see…”
  • “I would like to have seen…”
  • “I saw/noticed an opportunity to…”

Talk About Confidentiality

  • Please don’t talk about the observation.
  • Please don’t talk to each other during the observation.
  • Please do not give any feedback on instruction, positive or negative.
  • You can describe the process.
  • Be appreciative, not complementary.
  • Transfer learning to Guides or Journals and shred STAR Protocols.
